I purchased the Brother HL-2140 in January b/c I have had such a good experience with the Brother MFC-7420, an all-in-one that is, admittedly, a lot more expensive than the HL-2140. However, I made the mistake of thinking that same manufacturer = same quality.
The 2140 has a real problem with paper jams. When I first set it up, it was jamming on every 1-3 pages! I've found that if you are extremely careful to fan the paper, avoid paper with the slightest curl, and cross your fingers, you just might be spared the annoying process of removing jammed paper.
Keeping the paper-jam caveat in mind, I find the printer otherwise to be usable for low-volume print jobs. I wouldn't advise using it to print, say, a batch of invoices or the draft of your epic novel.

I had 2 Brother 2140 printers. Compare to HP and Samsung, Brother 2140 is the worst printer i ever had. Not reliable and bad quality. The printer continue having toner problem. The toner used up quickly than normal. After using this printer for 4 months, I end up have to buy another HP printer. Brother customer service are very bad too. Don't buy. Don't waste your money. Buy HP or Samsung.

Well, I'm trying to figure out why this printer was so inexpensive. It prints fast, and with good quality. Out of the box I printed a 60 page document which took only a minute or so. The printer is small, and could easily fit on top of my desk (though I keep it underneath). It has lots of options, easily adjustable in settings (I went to print->advanced and turned on the toner-saving mode).

It uses 5 Watts electricity in standby but I prefer to turn it off when not in use. Thankfully, it's ready to print within 20 seconds of flipping the power on. While printing, it does dim the lights in my old apartment, but nothing serious. Not too loud; it can be heard in the adjacent room on quiet enough days. Pages come out with a very slight bend but it's hardly perceptible, and probably unavoidable for such a small printer.

It isn't wireless, and you will have to buy your own usb cable to connect it. I've only printed 100 pages with it so far but have had no problems. Out of the box it is a 5-star printer, but I gave it 4 because I anticipate something to go wrong to justify its low price tag.

I am a college student who has to print a lot papers. This printer is great! I have already printed over 500 pages this semester and it is going strong. The manual duplex works pretty painlessly once you figure out how to re-insert the paper back into the tray.

If you need to print a lot of black and white documents and are tired of paying inkjet prices for fewer prints, this is a great option for you.

I've had this printer for a little over a month and have yet to have a single problem with it. I love the duplex feature that does an excellent job of guiding you through the necessary steps, and the print speed is simply great. After having used inkjet printers up to this point, I'm in heaven with the ease and speed with which I can use this printer. There may be *better* ones on the market, but for the price and the features, I imagine this one being hard to top. As a grad student, I print a lot of pages, and this has kept up every step of the way so far. I highly recommend it!
